New Canadian Sanctions Against the Russian Energy Sector

Sanctions mainly target Russian oil and gas giants Lukoil and Gazprom Canada announced on Friday a series of new sanctions imposed on Moscow targeting 35 personalities and six companies in the Russian energy sector, several local media reported. Ottawa’s sanctions mainly target the Russian oil and gas giant Lukoil as well as senior officials of Gazprom and its various subsidiaries.

In addition, the Russian Ministers of Energy and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, and former Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, specify the same sources. Likewise, former National Hockey League player Alexander Frolov and chess grandmaster Anton Demchenko are among those targeted by these sanctions.

Since the outbreak of the Russian war in Ukraine on February 24, Canada has been one of the member states of the G7 and NATO that has supported Ukraine the most financially, militarily, and politically, while inflicting severe sanctions on Russia.
